9 April, 2014

The “Young Barristers” address the Government of Georgia and the Parliament with an initiative to make amendments in the Georgian statute on “Victim recognition of those harmed during a rally raid of April 9th 1989” – the lawyers of the organization announce at the press conference.

According to the statement, the amendments of year 2006 invalidated majority of compensations of those injured on April 9th 1989, among them concessions on gas, energy etc. In addition to this, the Georgian statute on Social Support stipulates that only family members of April 9 victims will be compensated. According to the lawyers, the statute holds nothing on family members of those, who were fully or partially deprived of working abilities. In addition, the Georgian statute on Social Support mentions that the injured are imposed a compensation only if they belong to individuals of special care needs, impoverished families or remain homeless.

Non-governmental organization the “Young Barristers” recommend the Government of Georgia and the legislative authority to recover former social supports of the statute (energy, gas, etc. utility allowance), in addition, to increase pension amount, which currently equals to 22 GEL. The organization also announces, that not only the ones imposed by the statute must be compensated, but the ones registered in a corresponding authority as injured on April 9th as well.

According to the statements of the organization representatives, recommendation will be sent to the Government of Georgia and the Parliament in the upcoming days.
