The “Young Barristers” stop monitoring of Ministry of Defence logistics, Sues Rustavi 2 in Journalist Ethics Charter

16 April, 2014

The “Young Barristers” respond to various opinions of the Minister of Defence of Georgia – Irakli Alasania stated during a TV interview dated on April 8th 2014. In addition, the organization mentions professional responsibility of Giorgi Gabunia – Rustavi 2 journalist.

According to Archil Kaikatsishvili, the co-founder and chief-executive of the “Young Barristers”, the organization diverges from each approach and announcement degrading authority of the Georgian Army.

The “Young Barristers” has been carrying out written conversation with Ministry of Defence of Georgia concerning a field of logistics since July 2013.  Thus, activities of the organization towards the public authority represented a process of monitorning, not interpretation of aimed campaign.

Due to possibilities of different interpretations, the “Young Barristers” ceases the monitoring process of logistics issues of Ministry of Defence, since a legal trust exists towards investigative agencies working on the issue. The organization hereby states, no claim was issued to the Prosecutor’s office on April 8th 2014. The organization prepared a statement and requested current investigation results. Therefore, the “Young Barristers” will make further possible statements after investigation results are published

The organization is concerned with a publicly stated opinion of Giorgi Gabunia -  author of Rustavi 2 talk show “Archevani”. The journalist made statements concerning secret relations of the organization with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia and used “rumors” as a proof. The organization believes the journalist violated professional ethics and principle of facts accuracy. The journalist humiliated authority of the organization in the process of trust relations with partners, donor organizations, public groups and clients of the “Young Barristers”.

On April 10th 2014, the “Young Barristers” addressed the CEO of the TV company Nika Gvaramia to deny the information harming a business reputation on talk show “Archevani”, which never happened. Correspondingly, the organization will file a suit against Giorgi Gabunia in Journalists Ethics Charter for infringing professional standards and will continue to act according to law.
