11 July, 2014

The organization “Young Barristers”, in Tbilisi, held a public campaign concerning second round of local elections, for raising voter’s awareness and informing the importance of their participation in elections. The organization offered people special newsletter made in accordance to the topic – “self-government – use your right”. The public campaign was held at three populous sites of Tbilisi – near “Freedom Square”, “Rustaveli” and “Marjanishvili” subway stations. In total, 500 copies of the newsletter were distributed to the society.

The organization, in the newsletter created for second round of self-government, payed attention to the next topics: where would the next rund of elections be held, how would the winners be announced, which candidates will be running for which municipalies across Georgia and what kind of changes will be done with the new self-government. In addition, the reader will be able to see the results of the first round and evaluation of pre-election circumstances. Also, the involvement of international observers in the second round. The organization paid exceptional attention to the city mayor candidates. In the article “Tbilisi second round”, there will be broad information about both candidates, Nika Melia and Davit Narmania, their directions, views and biographies.

According to the letter from newsletter editorial office, in the history of ellections in Georgia, second round is something that never happened, and it drastically changes political and public approach to the culture of elections, raises the public responsibility and points the people involved in politics to the fulfillment of the responsibilities that they received from their voters. Accordingly, “Young Barristers” pay exceptional attention to the informing of voters, because informed citizens, who make independent and free choice, are taking part in forming democracy and are aware of the responsibilities they impose upon the candidates. Accordingly, for elections, right and responsibilities, airing of the right information, is one of the main conditions for establishing democratic approaches in the country. The main power of the government is people, although this constitutional statute, in the history of elections in independent Georgia, often was noted against society’s will.

For the information: “Young Barristers” will hold an activity monitoring for the second round of local elections. The organization will be observing elections on July 12. In note to this, it is mentionable that this is the second newsletter issued by the company about elections. “Young Barristers” also held a public campaign to raise voter’s awareness on presidential elections in 2013.
