The “Young Barristers” join a statement made by non-governmental organization demanding an effective investigation of a dead prisoner case at Geguti prison.
According to the spread information, one of the prisoners out of 5 convicts located at Geguti N14 facility died at 2:30 on March 4th 2014.
According to primary information, the dead prisoner has multiple injuries on head and throat. A precise reason of death will be known after expertise. Investigation has been started.
Non-governmental organizations express condolences to the family of dead and mention, that an effective investigation must be held on the fact in order to reveal and charge correspondingly every guilty person. Apart from this, it is also relevant to set charges to employees of Geguti N14 facility, who could react on fight and avoid a fatal ending of the incident.
Recent incidents at Geguti prison reveal, that the administration does not provide order and safety in the facility. Unfortunately, it is not an only fact of prisoner’s death in the prison. We remind you, that in May of last year Levan Kortava was murdered in a same situation.
“The alliance asks the Ministry of Corrections to set forth all the preventing activities, which will provide appropriate order and safety in the prison and will reduce conflicts between the convicts” – the statement says.
Along with the “Young Barristers” the statement was made by the following organizations: “Georgian Young Lawyers Association”, “South Caucasus Regional office of Prison International Reforms”, “Women’s initiatives supporting group”, “The Georgian Center for Psychosocial and Medical Rehabilitation of Torture Victims (GCRT)”, “42nd Article of the Constitution”, “Georgian Professional Psychologists’ Association”, “Youth For Justice”, Public Defender, Global Initiative on Psychiatry – Tbilisi (GIP).
For your information: According to the statement of the Ministry of Corrections on March 5th, death of the prisoner was caused by the fight. On March 6th it was announced, that the prosecutors office will investigate a case of Giga Partenadze.
