The organization “Young Barristers” offers to the President of Georgia to present existing list of candidates to the public before presenting one candidate of the Chairman of the Supreme Court to the Parliament in accordance with the current legislation.

According to statement of co-founder and chief-executive of the “Young Barristers” – Archil Kaikatsishvili, that electing the Chairman of the Supreme Court of Georgia means the beginning of a new stage for the Georgian justice system. Accordingly, a candidate presented by the President of Georgia and approved by the Parliament of Georgia, along with political support, should have the high public trust.

According to the organization, the President of Georgia should give civil society the possibility of implementing direct democracy, which in this case means discussion and debates about presented candidates between the citizens, the media and non-governmental organizations. The President before proposing the candidacy, of the Chairman of the Supreme Court, should the society propose a candidate acceptable for them, in order to ensure the society in experience and professional capacity of the individuals selected by the President. We believe that submission of candidate of the Chairman of the Supreme Court should not be in a hurry. The President should present to the Parliament a candidate with high confidence and a sense of dignity highlighted during public discussion.

According to statement of Archil Kaikatsishvili, the “Young Barristers” expects nomination of the new Chairman of the Supreme Court from the community of judges, which would be justified and acceptable solution. The new Chairman is responsible to provide the real independence of the judicial system and judicial reform. Should perform the role of the main arbiter and establish a fair trial from the political court, in the process of restoring justice in the country. The new Chairman should determine the impartiality of the judicial system. In other cases, the judicial system will 10 more years lag behind the protection of public interests and the European experience.

Archil Kaikatsishvili has responded to the proposal of the Public Council creation because of the candidacy of the Chairman of the Supreme Court and mentioned that if the Council offers to the President acceptable criteria for selecting the Chairman, creation expediency of such Council does not exist. Since existing consultations regarding the Chairman of the Supreme Court of Georgia, is the issue of the political and social importance, and one month left before the nomination of a candidate, the President should present acceptable candidates to the public at first. Listen the public discussion on the issue and all citizens should have the right expectations.

The “Young Barristers” on the issue of explicit candidates of the Chairman of the Supreme Court of Georgia will conducted a public survey in Tbilisi, in the first part of February and determines general trust rates in society.
