The ”Young Barristers“ calls the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia for objective investigation of the case of so called 12 “thieves-in-law”

17 April, 2015

The organization “Young Barristers” calls for the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia for implementation of  urgent and effective legal activities in respect of the information, published through the press and  due to the high public interest , asks the MIA to make  clear explanations, regarding the case of  12 so called  “thieves-in-law”, who had opportunity to free move  within the territory of Georgia under the former government.

According to the Chief-executive of the organization “Young Barristers”, Archil Kaikatsishvili,  following information regarding the case, should be available for the society, in order to satisfy public interest towards it :  if  the investigation regarding the case is in progress or not, who are those officials, whose   legal liability has been raised for the promotion of the free move of  12  “thieves-in-law” within the territory of Georgia, what were  the possible connections and relationships between so called  “thieves-in-law” and the members  of the former Government  and at what stage  is the current  national strategy for combating  the so called “thieves’ world” .

The “Young Barristers” considers, that  published information , stating that, 3 so called “thieves-in-law”, entered the territory of Georgia in 2008 under the patronage of the former government,  5 “thieves-in law” _ in 2009, 1 _ in 2010, 2 _ in 2011, 1 _  in 2012,  should not be left beyond   proper consideration.  The organization had analyzed the strategy and attitudes of the Government after October 1, 2012 elections, towards the so called “thieves’ world”, on the basis of the statistical information obtained from the Tbilisi City Court. According to the analysis, the political will towards the legal liability and the prosecution of the members  of the so called “thieves’ world”  by the former and the current Governments,  is obvious. During 2008-2012, the Government did not adequately respond to the entry and free movement of so called “thieves-in-law” within the county’s territory , while, according to the statistics, during the period of 2013-2014, a verdict  of guilty,  has been passed for the membership of the “thieves’ world”  towards 15 person in total. The organization notes, that this statistics indicates the militant approach of the current Government and law enforcement institutions towards the so called “thieves’ world”,  which is directly linked  to the issue of maintaining  public safety  and  political stability.
