Georgian NGOs urge political parties operating in Georgia to condemn Andro Barnovi’s abusive behavior against Georgian police

17 July, 2015

“Every political parties, civic organization and public society should be very careful with issues concerning to the protection of territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country in order not to turn engaged in politically  provocative activities serving private political interests” - this was a respond of four Georgian NGOs: “Young Barristers”, “Center for Civic Involvement”, “Position” and “Youth Center _ Our Generation 1921” to the fact of insulting policeman in the conflict zone on July 16, 2015, on behalf of the member “United National Movement”, former Chief of the Administration of the President of Georgia, Andro Barnovi.

The Society should make relevant conclusionsabout the aim of Andro Barnovi, openly insulting Georgian police. The leaders of the NGOs, mentioned above, believe  that the former  official’s action before Russian soldiersalong the occupation line, served to discredit Georgian police, which obviously represents a humiliating action against Georgia as a State. The assault of a police officer, is an issue of much higher importance, than criticism of political party or an official. No political party, regardless ideology or direction has right to insult or undermine state institutions such as a police and army. Accordingly, we believe, that Mr. Barnov should apologize to the society for his behavior of July 16.

The NGOs appeal to the political parties of Georgia to make public announcements to drop a boundary between them and one of the leaders of “United National Movement”, Andro Barnovi’s insulting behavior.  Georgian political spectrum should unify and show joint approach not only with respect of Russian occupation, but also with respect of the protection of State institutions as well. Obviously challenging action on behalf of the member of “United National Movement”, near the occupation line, which the public saw on July 16, makes an impression of provocation and thus increases the danger of continued Russian occupation. This action served only to the aim of political confrontation of “United National Movement” with the Government and aimed to negatively demonstrate Governments balanced policy with Russia. Unfortunately, it is the entire State which suffers from the situations like this.

The representatives of the NGOs say, that 2008 August war has significantly affected the Country of Georgia. Accordingly, the Government has higher responsibility not to repeat the same mistakes and to protect public safety and territorial integrity by using all necessary instruments and means. All kinds of international diplomatic and inter-state contacts should be used to stop Russian’s “creeping annexation” of Georgia. In this situation, it is very important that Georgia was not engaged in the provocative actions and made all possible efforts to secure peace in the country.
